Headquartered in New York, Ener1 pursues multiple alternative energy applications through its three wholly-owned subsidiaries, EnerDel, Enerfuel and NanoEner, and its 89%-owned South Korea-based subsidiary, Enertech. Each business line combines cutting-edge research and development with world-class production and manufacturing expertise. The complementary technologies being developed strengthen Ener1’s position as a leader in the field of alternative energy and energy storage.

Furthermore, Ener1 is spearheading the national movement towards domestic high-performance battery production, a crucial element in the revitalization of the American automobile industry. Manufacturing its systems domestically from end to end, Ener1’s site in Indiana is the only large-scale, lithium-ion, automotive battery plant based in the US. No other advanced car battery production capacity like it exists in the nation.

Global Alliances

Ener1 places particular importance on its strategic alliances, which enable the company to build upon existing technology and manufacturing platforms. Strategic alliances in research, development and manufacturing include Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), ITOCHU Corporation, and Kyushu Electric Power (KEPCO).

ANL is one of the nation’s leading laboratories, bringing together the world’s most capable scientists and engineers. EnerDel and ANL were recently awarded the R&D100 Award for excellence in technology and innovative design.

ITOCHU Corporation is a long-term strategic partner and seed investor in Ener1. In addition to being the company's sales and marketing partner in Asia, ITOCHU is also the largest global reseller of manufacturing equipment for lithium-ion battery production, providing EnerDel with unique access to specialized equipment and material markets.

KEPCO, the fourth-largest publicly traded power and utility company in Japan, is partnering with Ener1 to create and manufacture rapid recharging systems for electric vehicles.

Domestic Contracts

Ener1 has development or supply contracts in each of the three automobile verticals: EV, HEV, and PHEV. The HEV and PHEV development contracts are with the United States Advanced Battery Consortium, an umbrella organization consisting of Chrysler LLC, Ford Motor Company and General Motors Corporation, funded by the US Department of Energy and dedicated to collaborative research. Additional development contracts with the US Department of Energy and US Department of Defense have been awarded to Ener1 to improve lithium-ion battery design and performance for a wide range of transportation and military applications.
